Description
This miniature begonia is an enchanting rarity that exists in the wild only in a certain region in southern Thailand and is also rarely found in stores. Its leaves are arranged somewhat like the fronds of a fern, which has given it the name pteridiformis, meaning fern-like in Latin. Because of its need for high humidity, it should be kept in a terrarium, for which it is well suited with its small size, which rarely exceeds 15cm. It is best to keep it in a mounted form, as it also grows epiphytically in nature.
The product photos show examples of the plant. You will receive a specimen that corresponds in size, shape and coloration to the product photos.
- Growth type: climbing
- Origin: Southern Thailand
- Other names: Begonia Pteridiformis
Ben's tips on plant care:
- Habitat/Light Requirements: Partial shade to shade
- Substrate: mounted or in orchid substrate, ensure good drainage
- Temperature: optimal at 20-28° C (day), 17-23° C (night), not above 35° C
- Watering: Keep the plant permanently moist, but avoid waterlogging as well as drying out at all costs, when mounted spray regularly (but let the leaves dry well!), ideally use lukewarm, low-calcium rainwater.
- Humidity: needs high humidity, place in a terrarium or a plant showcase
- Nutrient addition: in the growth phase fertilize every 2 weeks with diluted, potassium-containing liquid fertilizer
- Due to its need for high humidity, this begonia is primarily suitable as a terrarium plant and rather not for indoor growing.
- During the approximately 4-week dormancy period when the begonia sheds its leaves and survives as a bulb, it should be kept dry and watered very infrequently.
