Bulbophyllum maxillare

The striking Bulbophyllum Maxillare combines two impressive characteristics, because although it is rather small itself and is therefore ideal for keeping in terrariums, it still produces very decorative flowers up to 6 cm in size with lanceolate, long sepals in rich purple with a bright yellow edge. Like many miniature orchids, it prefers to be kept in a mounted form, as it also grows as an epiphyte in the wild.

Ben's tips on plant care:

- Location/light requirements: bright, but avoid direct sunlight
- Substrate: mounted with Ben's Premium Sphagnum moss on Xaxim, roots or branches
- Temperature: optimal at 22-36 °C in summer, 15-26 °C in winter
- Watering: Spray when tied up (daily during the growth phase, otherwise every 2-3 days), but allow the plant to dry out well.  Only use lukewarm water with a low lime content. Water less in winter.
- Humidity: requires high humidity, use a humidifier or place it in the terrarium
- Addition of nutrients: Fertilize moderately every 2 weeks with diluted orchid fertilizer during the growing season. Less frequently in fall, not at all in winter
- To keep the moisture at its roots, the plant should ideally be mounted with some sphagnum moss.
- Ensure that the terrarium is well ventilated to prevent fungal infestation.
